ABOUT THE PROJECT
Core Gameplay
The main idea was to transform chess into an engaging roguelike experience. To achieve this, units were given as rewards, encouraging progression and variety. Previous experience showed that players spend more time in a game when they can feel attached to the elements they interact with, so instead of traditional chess pieces, they were redesigned as characters. New units were introduced while some classic ones were removed, but the core feeling of chess was preserved. Additionally, different board layouts were added to increase run variability, making each playthrough feel unique and reinforcing the roguelike structure.
The player's goal is to eliminate all enemy pieces in each room using their characters. After clearing a room, the player progresses forward, continuing through encounters until reaching the final boss room.
For the UI, a custom shader was created using a horizontally moving gradient combined with a noise overlay, giving the interface a distinct visual identity.
Animations were implemented using a procedural approach with DOTween, allowing for smooth and flexible motion without relying on traditional frame-by-frame animation.
